“Queen Bee”
Materials: Nylon Fabric over Paper Clay

Description
The Queen Bee Is painted using gelato paints, she is entirely cloth over clay and is fully jointed. Her hair is mohair. Her eyes are glass and wires are used under the fabric to make the upper and lower lids.
Her outfit is silk and her shoes are made with cork. Her Bee is also jointed and is paper clay covered with hand-dyed mohair. The Bee’s bottle was also made by sourcing a bottle and constructing the nipple. The bee also has a proboscis inside the nipple constructed with floral wire. The legs are also painted floral wire. The chair is made using nylon-wrapped wires and the cushions are made with cotton fabric, The flowers on the chair are buttons and the big sunflower is metal. The feet of the chair are beads

“Realistic Rhymes”

Description
This girl is cloth over clay and is fully jointed, her hair is mohair, her outfit is chiffon, and her bunny slippers are made using faux-fur and embroidery floss. Her eyes are glass with wires used under the fabric to shape her upper and lower lids. She is painted with gelato paints. Her tuffet is made by covering a wood base with cloth and adding a cushion. The miniature book was from 1920 and was printed out 1/4 scale then a thin piece of chipboard was used for the cover, the pigs are plastic with acrylic painted shirts and they are wired in with nylon covered wires.

“The Candy Queen”

Description
She is painted with gelato paints. Her eyes are silicone and there are wires under the fabric to form the upper and lower lids over the eyes. For her outfit to obtain the desired effect I combined fabrics with paper using a wheat paste recipe for a unique one of a kind piece of fabric. I also used pink silk and different colors of netting. Her corset buttons are made using tiny pins. Her crown was made with a covered cork to look like a marshmallow, the candies are made with polymer except for the licorice which was made using twisted floral wire. Her base is wood painted with acrylics with a crackle effect applied. Shoes are cotton with a finish applied to make them appear more like leather, her heals are polymer and resemble licorice Allsorts. Her cotton candy is mohair.

“The Baffled Bunny”

Description
The laughing girl nylon fabric over paper clay, her eyes are glass with wires under the fabric to shape her upper and lower lids. She is painted with gelato paints and her hair is mohair. Her outfit is a crinkled silk chiffon. Her slip is a silk gauze and her shoes are satin. The bunny is paper clay and is jointed. The ears are cloth covered wires, so they can be positioned. A combination of all natural animal fibers were used for the fur, mostly alpaca with a bit of mohair and a tiny bit of wool. The Easter basket was made using book board for the bottom and floral wires. Thin cotton thread was painted and woven over the wires. The Easter eggs were painted with gelato paints and micron pens. Her stool is a covered wood block using faux leather with an Easter theme.

Application Standards

Excellence of Artistry
  • Every applicant should hold the highest personal standards for his or her work.
  • The work must be well-designed, made, and finished.
  • The work must show excellent control of the medium.
  • Sculpting should be flawless, with accurate proportions or, if exaggerated, should harmoniously fit the concept of the piece.
  • Hair should be of a material appropriate to the piece and flawlessly applied.
  • Costuming should be created out of a good idea or concept and be expertly made, using materials appropriate to the figure’s scale or its intended effect.
Identity of Design
  • Every applicant should have a style of working that is unique, consistent, and recognizable. Having a true signature style is an essential element of NIADA’s standards.
  • NIADA looks for engaging, captivating work that inspires a meaningful response.
