1999 Foundation Course Highlights

NIADA Foundation School, 1999

by Barbara Hilliker

Thirty-four doll artists attended the NIADA Foundation School founded in 1998 by E. J. Taylor. E.J. met with students at Orientation on Friday evening, but was unable to participate further because of illness. In his absense, several NIADA artists stepped forward so that this exciting program could continue. The faculty included Helen Kish, Robert Tonner, Richard and Jodi Creager, and Shelley Thornton.

The curriculum included lectures and the application of various techniques. Subjects covered included anatomy, color theory sculpting in clay using an armature, and draping, which included making a pattern to fit a specific form.

The schedule this year included a feedback session allowing students to provide input to NIADA concerning various elements of the course. Though E.J. was severly missed, his excellent founding standards ensured an exciting session.

The NIADA Foundation School 2000 in Chicago will be directed by NIADA Artist, Heather Maciak. It will be open to students who have attended the beginning foundation courses in 1998 or 1999.
