GENERAL MASTER CLASS INFORMATION

NIADA is excited to offer expanded opportunities to study dollmaking in 2009, with four full days of classes plus a full day of hour-long demos. Demo Day is open (at no cost) to anyone registered for classes or conference. Students can take the schedule they choose, anywhere from one half-day class to four full days of classes. PLEASE REGISTER EARLY TO GET THE CLASSES YOU WANT. CLASS SIZE IS LIMITED. PLEASE INDICATE SECOND CHOICES IF YOU WOULD LIKE OPTIONS IN THE EVENT THAT CLASSES ARE FULL. NIADA reserves the right to cancel any classes that do not reach minimum registration by July 1, 2009. Late registration will be available for classes not filled or cancelled up until the time of the class.

Class registration is open to EVERYONE, both NIADA conference attendees and non-attendees alike. Conference attendees receive reduced class fees, and those registered for classes on Friday and Saturday (regular conference days) will receive a further deduction from their conference fee to compensate for missed conference activities.

When classes have been chosen, registrants should add up the number of days they are registering for, and then figure their fees based on the total class time. The more classes taken, the lower the daily rate. Fees are as follows:

For 2 days or more:

  • $100 per day (NIADA conference attendee)
  • $115 per day (non-conference attendee)

For 1 to 1 ½ days:

  • $110 per day (NIADA conference attendee)
  • $125 per day (non-conference attendee)

For one half day only:

  • $120 per day ($60 for half day class) (NIADA conference attendee)
  • $136 per day ($68 for half day class) (non-conference attendee)

As indicated in class descriptions below, Additional Kit Fees are charged by most teachers to cover materials and tools used in class projects. These are separate from class fees, and should be paid directly to teachers at the time of the class.

Lesley Keeble

#1001 Chaos Free Costume Design

Class Description: Lesley will share some of her costuming tips in this workshop offering stimulating strategies to break through old mind sets on clothing design. Combined color and design theory with doll makers in mind! Students will first create a workable, 12 inch stuffed* mannequin in the first hour and move on to cutting and draping simulations. Learn to punch up your costumes with color and texture. Discover why upside down and ass backwards can bring startling, innovative design solutions.

* Free standing, three dimensional dress forms on a wooden base

Time: 1 day (Tuesday)

Additional Kit Fee: $30.00 Materials fee covering mannequin supplies, mini color wheels, decorative papers and non-traditional fabric/fibers plus handouts.

Student Supplies: Simple sewing machine plus thread and bobbins (bring if driving, if not you can borrow), sewing scissors, glass head pins (2 boxes), T pins (assorted sizes), cameras and/or sketch books to record spontaneous design solutions

#2002 Fabric Sculpting Techniques

Class Description:

Students will use wire as an armature, joined with batting and panty hose, paint and glue and imagination… They will learn this adaptable technique in order to build: snouts, teeth, noses, paws, hands, nails, claws, shoes, ears, hoofs, eyes and eyelids…Be able to add a relaxed attitude into your wired cloth figure.

Time: 2 days (Tuesday and Wednesday)

Additional Kit Fee: $5.00

The teacher will supply the paint and glue.

Student Supplies: Bring to class:

Sewing supplies: straight pins, scissors, needles, thread: a spool of white (to match white batting) and a spool to match the other panty hose tone that you will bring

Fabrics: nylon panty hose: a pair of white, semi-opaque as smooth in texture as possible (avoid ribs) it will be used as an under-skin, also bring another pair of panty hose in the tone of your choice to be used as a top skin layer (also as smooth as possible…no ribs), batting…bonded polyester, very wiry texture can be purchased off a roll, by the yard. One yard should be enough.

Wire: telephone wire (the plastic coated copper one with different colored stripes) usually bundled many together inside a grey tube, 28 gauge soft galvanized steel wire  (beading wire would work), 18 gauge soft galvanized steel wire, either covered with a plastic coating or not.

Tools: needle-nosed pliers with a wire-cutting capability, 2 brushes: one fine for painting delicate detail and one not so delicate for covering small areas with glue, some paper towels, a few layers of aluminum foil to use as a palette, a paper cup for water.

You will be using small amounts of acrylic paint. I will supply it unless you already have your own. Don’t go out and buy paint if you don’t have it.

Kathryn Walmsley#2003 Animal Magnetism

Class Description: Create a character animal to hone your skills in working with Paperclay. Class will start with learning to draft a simple layout pattern, continue with various types of armatures, press mold use and complete with finished sculpting with attitude.  Class will include sanding, finishing and painting demos with complete handouts on all areas covered.

Time: 2 days (Tuesday and Wednesday)

Additional Kit Fee: $30.00

Student Supplies: Bring paper, pencil, small size sculpting tools (Kathryn will have tools to try or buy) Exacto knife, picture references of animals.

Marlaine Verhelst & Ankie Daanen

#2004 Dutch Touch Theatre

Class Description: Ankie and Marlaine created this class and will teach it together.
Students will sculpt and paint two hand puppets and paint and embellish a wooden theatre.
The sculpting will be in air drying clay.

Time: 2 days (Tuesday and Wednesday)

Additional Kit Fee: $80.00

The class kit includes:
- a wooden theater (especially designed for this class)
- 2 prepared air dried puppet head bases (2.75 inches / 7 cm.)
- 2 puppet bodies / costumes
- materials to embellish both puppets and theatre

Student Supplies:
Bring a basic sewing kit and acrylics to paint the theatre
Note: the puppets' clothing is in neutrals (beige, off white and brown)

#2005 Li Hua, Delicate Pearl Blossom

Class Description: Understanding what special techniques make a doll exceptional is the focus of this class. Join Leslie in learning from start to finish, with detailed instructions, how to create a beautiful and durable doll. Our focus will be on needle sculpting a head, inserting glass eyes with an overlay and making armatures in the body for a free-standing doll. Sewing, stuffing and color composition with fabrics will also be explored. As a bonus, Leslie will discuss the Chinese New Year traditions for which this doll was designed.

Experience Level: Intermediate to Advanced

Prerequisite skills: Ease of using a sewing machine and hand-sewing

Time: 2 days (Tuesday and Wednesday)

Additional Kit Fee: $38.00 Includes head knit fabric, body fabric, pattern, overlay knit fabric, 8mm eyes, lashes, ¼ dowel and horsehair.

Student Supplies: Bring bag of poly-stuffing (firmer is better), pencil and eraser (fabric eraser), decorator chalks – if you have, fine line marker in black, black Berol or Sanford Prisma Color, straight pins, Tacky Glue, ½ “ flat brush for using with glue, assorted needles: 2 ½ “ long, 5” dollmaking and chenille, thread in cream or peach, fabric and paper scissors, small scissors (suggested if you have them- 5” Fiskars or 3 ½ “ curved manicure), decorative beads or buttons, paper and pencil for notes, glasses for close-up work if necessary

#2006 Ball Jointed Humpty

Class Description:

What Happened to Humpty after the fall??

He came back to life as a ball jointed doll!
 
Learn basic ball jointing techniques by sculpting a OOAK Humpty Dumpty with ball jointed legs. We will be sculpting over a Styrofoam base using "La Doll", the air-dry stone clay used by most Asian BJD (ball jointed doll) artists in creating their OOAK jointed dolls. By learning the basic jointing process, this class will give you enough information to be able to create your own BJD figures. (Student should have a basic knowledge of sculpting)

Time: 2 days (Tuesday and Wednesday)
 
Additional Kit Fee: $25.00
Includes the following along with some shared items: 1 pkg La Doll, Styrofoam pieces and balls for body and joints, wood beads for eyes, stringing elastic, wire,  paper towels, saran wrap, paper cups, straws, paints, mohair, glue

Student Supplies:
Bring sculpting tools, paint brushes: lg for overall painting, med flat for painting stripes and shoes, and small for eye detail, Exacto knife, small pair scissors, Plexiglas roller

#1007 Fantasy Doll

Class Description: We will model the head, face and bust of a doll, polish it, paint it, and design the doll’s costume and coiffure. We will use our imagination to create a modern fantasy image.

Time: 1 day (Wednesday)

Additional Kit Fee: $50.00 Kit includes the stand, air-hardening modeling clay, set of acrylic paints, semi-finished parts of doll body (arms made of fabric), various fabrics and material for decoration, wool for making hair, two brushes for painting face

Student Supplies: You do not need to bring anything. All materials will be supplied by the teacher.

#1008 Felt Couture

Class Description:

Imagine the possibilities you’ll discover when you create sumptuous, lightweight felt for use in your doll costumes and accessories. Forget what you think about bulky felt. This is handmade fabric for couture costuming: drapable, sensuous and unique. We will explore a spectrum of feltmaking techniques using a base of fine silk, cotton, and merino wool. You will learn the art of creating traditional, nuno and cobweb felt that adds a new and distinctive dimension to your work. Expect to make a finished piece of fine felt fabric approximately 22” x 22” resulting in a sampler of techniques.

Time: 1 day (Wednesday)

Additional Kit Fee: $20.00

Materials fee includes: Merino wool (Choose from a rainbow of colors!), fine silk and cotton base fabrics, novelty yarns and fibers for surface embellishing, use of instructor’s felting equipment, and instruction booklet.

Student Supplies: Students will need to bring two old bath-size towels, scissors, 1 liter plastic water bottle with drinking spout, 1 kitchen sponge approx 3”x5” and a small bucket or pail,  your favorite colors of novelty yarns (mohair or wool yarns felt well) small pieces of old lightweight fabrics that can be incorporated into the felt. Class Size Maximum: 20, Minimum: 2

On Thursday, six NIADA artists will give extended hour-long demos of dollmaking techniques which they employ.

Demo Day will be FREE and open to anyone taking classes, as well as all conference registrants.

#1009 Sculpting and Positioning Ears

Class Description: Students should bring a head they have sculpted at home from their choice of clay type. If using air drying clay or ceramic clay, the head should be kept moist in a plastic bag. Sylvia will critique and help students to refine their heads, if necessary, and you will learn how to sculpt nice ears and set them at the right place on your improved head.

Time: 1 day (Friday)

Student Supplies: Each student is to bring the doll head(s) they have been working on and extra medium for the ears (remember to keep the head humid in a plastic bag or box), also your sculpting tools, cleaning rags, water cup, paper and drawing pencils, a small paint brush, and a lightweight potter’s wheel or turning cheese board or plastic turn-table (only if available)

Class Size: Maximum: 15, Minimum: 5

#1010 Drafting a Cloth Body for your Sculpted Head, Hands & Feet

Class Description: This will be a class where students will bring their own head and hands, perhaps feet also, and learn how to draft a cloth body appropriate for the doll parts. Proportions for different ages, realistic as well as exaggerated/distorted figures will be covered. Students will learn formulas for drafting a body that can be used for future sculptures. Pattern variations necessary for flange necks and shoulder plates, armatures, and special poses will be included. How to draft basic feet, how to draft feet to fit into specific shoes, and how to draft shoes for over the cloth feet included as well.

Time: 1 day (Friday)

Student Supplies: Students should bring their own head and hands (feet optional). Also bring scissors, pencils, erasers, tape measure and clear grid 2”x18” ruler.

Class Description:
Learn to sculpt and paint a doll head in air-drying clay.

Time: 1 ½ days (Thursday and Friday morning)

#2012 Sculpting a Child’s head and breast plate in polymer clay

Class Description: You will learn a method of sculpting that will help you visualize and develop your own style of sculpting.  Along with anatomy you will also learn proportions for different ages of children.  Included will be sculpting a breast plate and how to make both a stationary and a movable head.

Time: 2 days (Friday and Saturday)

Additional Kit Fee: $15.00

Student Supplies: The student will need to bring a wooden base with a hole that will fit a 3/8 to ½ inch dowel with one end pointed.  The dowel needs to be 6-8 inches long.  You will also need to bring your favorite sculpting tools, double pointed knitting needles any size from 4 to 6.

#2013 Sculpting Animal Heads for Anthropomorphic Figures

Class Description: Beginning with cat and rabbit heads, Akira will teach how to create your own pattern for an animal head; needle sculpting techniques; add ears and paint; and demonstrate alternatives for covering the sculpture in various materials.

Time: 2 days (Friday and Saturday)

Additional Kit Fee:  $20.00

Will include polyfil, gauze, paperclay, leather scraps, paint, spray, stiffener and glue

Student Supplies: Each student should bring a 100% cotton t-shirt, machine thread, quilting thread (color is not important), scissors, pictures of animals (including profile of head), sewing machine (if driving bring machine, if you are not driving, you can either share or a machine can probably be rented from Arrowmont.) The machine sewing part of the class is minimal. It is just to sew up the pattern pieces before stuffing.

#2014 Hand-Felted Character Head

Class Description: In this class, Deborah teaches her fascinating technique for transforming fluffy merino wool into a lifelike character head. The artist will guide you through her step-by-step process to create your own unique character. The class will explore tips and techniques for sculptural feltmaking that combines traditional wet felting with contemporary needle sculpting. Students will have the option to choose either felt or glass-like eyes. Expect to finish a character head that you can attach to one of your own doll bodies or use for future reference. You will gain enough knowledge to continue to investigate the endless possibilities of sculptural feltmaking.

Time: 2 days (Friday and Saturday)

Additional Kit Fee: $25.00

Included is Polyfil batting, stuffing wool, merino wool, felting needles, locks for hair detail, eyes and instruction booklet.

Student Supplies: Bring two old bath-size towels, sharp scissors (small or medium), decorator chalks or pastels for facial coloring, one synthetic #4 flat artist’s brush, Sakura Pigma micron .05 pens for details (one brown and one black).

#2015 Head, Hands and Feet in Direct Sculpted Porcelain

Class Description: Students will learn how to sculpt a doll directly into porcelain with a hollow head and also learn how to sculpt hands and feet.  This class is a unique chance to work in a new medium.  Most of the sculpting techniques could be used in other sculpting media as well.  Students will take home the unfired pieces. 

Time: 2 days (Friday and Saturday)

Additional Kit Fee: $10.00

Student Supplies: The teacher will bring everything that is needed; the students can bring favorite sculpting tools.

#0516 Painting the Doll

Class Description:

Participants will bring their own dolls, heads or costuming that they want to paint in the class. These can be any medium—cloth, clay, wood or papier mache. The class will be taught through demonstrations as well as individual consultations. Tips on realistic skin tones as well as more bright or fantastic colors will be discussed. The lesson will be designed to help each student achieve the kind of look he/she wants as a personal expression. Acrylic paint will be used for expediency.

Time: ½ day (Saturday afternoon)

Additional Kit Fee: none

Student Supplies: Students will need to bring their own dolls, heads or costuming that they want to paint.  Also bring acrylic paint, a tube each of a red, a blue, a yellow (I suggest yellow ocher for realistic skin tones), raw umber, white and black. Students are welcome to bring any other colors as well, if they like, but these are the basics needed to paint skin tones. Students also must bring a variety of brushes in proportion to the piece they want to paint—large for long swags of fabric, smaller for painting intricate faces and details. A palette and water cup will also be necessary.

Class Description: Learn to design and create costumes for your creations.

Time: ½ day (Saturday afternoon)

The class will have a CD and the costume kit for each student to purchase only if they choose.

#1018 Moving Experience

Class Description:

This class will focus on designing and assembling simple moving mechanisms to enhance your art work.  Students will complete an automaton working on a pre-dried Paperclay base. The class will explore the versatility of this mechanism, discuss ideas about its use in figurative work and complete their own automaton with paint and embellishment. Complete handouts included.

Time: 1 day (Saturday)

Additional Kit Fee: $25.00, Teacher will include all required materials

Student Supplies: Students will need to bring an Exacto knife, wire cutters and pliers, paper and pencil, small size sculpting tools (the teacher will have tools to try or buy), a ½ inch flat wash brush and a 10/0 round spotter brush.
