GENERAL
MASTER CLASS INFORMATION
NIADA is excited to offer
expanded opportunities to study dollmaking in 2009,
with four full days of classes plus a full day
of hour-long demos. Demo Day is open (at no cost)
to anyone registered for classes or conference.
Students can take the schedule they choose, anywhere
from one half-day class to four full days of classes.
PLEASE REGISTER EARLY TO GET THE CLASSES YOU WANT.
CLASS SIZE IS LIMITED. PLEASE INDICATE SECOND CHOICES
IF YOU WOULD LIKE OPTIONS IN THE EVENT THAT CLASSES
ARE FULL. NIADA reserves the right to cancel any
classes that do not reach minimum registration
by July 1, 2009. Late
registration will be available for classes not
filled or cancelled up until the time of the class.
Class registration
is open to EVERYONE, both NIADA conference attendees
and non-attendees alike. Conference attendees receive
reduced class fees, and those registered for classes
on Friday and Saturday (regular conference days)
will receive a further deduction from their conference
fee to compensate for missed conference activities.

When classes have
been chosen, registrants should add up the number
of days they are registering for, and then figure
their fees based on the total class time.
The more classes taken, the lower the daily rate. Fees
are as follows:

Chaos Free Costume Design
Class Description: Lesley
will share some of her costuming tips in this workshop
offering stimulating strategies to break through
old mind sets on clothing design. Combined color
and design theory with doll makers in mind! Students
will first create a workable, 12 inch stuffed*
mannequin in the first hour and move on to cutting
and draping simulations. Learn to punch up your
costumes with color and texture. Discover why upside
down and ass backwards can bring startling, innovative
design solutions.
* Free standing, three
dimensional dress forms on a wooden base
Time: 1 day (Tuesday)

Materials fee covering mannequin supplies, mini
color wheels, decorative papers and non-traditional
fabric/fibers plus handouts.

sewing machine plus thread and bobbins (bring if

cameras and/or sketch books to record spontaneous
design solutions

#2002 Fabric Sculpting Techniques
Class Description:
Students will use wire
as an armature, joined with batting and panty hose,
paint and glue and imagination… They will
learn this adaptable technique in order to build:
snouts, teeth, noses, paws, hands, nails, claws,
shoes, ears, hoofs, eyes and eyelids…Be
able to add a relaxed attitude into your wired
cloth figure.
Time: 2 days (Tuesday
and Wednesday)

the paint and glue.

Bring to class:
Sewing supplies: straight
pins, scissors, needles, thread: a spool of white
(to match white batting) and a spool to match the
other panty hose tone that you will bring
Fabrics: nylon panty
hose: a pair of white, semi-opaque as smooth in
texture as possible (avoid ribs) it will be used
as an under-skin, also bring another pair of panty
hose in the tone of your choice to be used as a
top skin layer (also as smooth as possible…no
ribs), batting…bonded polyester, very wiry
texture can be purchased off a roll, by the yard.
One yard should be enough.
Wire: telephone
wire (the plastic coated copper one with different
colored stripes) usually bundled many together
inside a grey tube, 28 gauge soft galvanized steel
wire (beading wire would work), 18 gauge
soft galvanized steel wire, either covered with
a plastic coating or not.
Tools: needle-nosed
pliers with a wire-cutting capability, 2 brushes:
one fine for painting delicate detail and one not
so delicate for covering small areas with glue,
some paper towels, a few layers of aluminum foil
to use as a palette, a paper cup for water.
You will be using small
amounts of acrylic paint. I will supply it unless
you already have your own. Don’t go out and
buy paint if you don’t have it.

Animal Magnetism
Class Description: Create
a character animal to hone your skills in
working with Paperclay. Class will start
with learning to draft a simple layout pattern,
continue with various types of armatures,
press mold use and complete with finished
sculpting with attitude. Class will
include sanding, finishing and painting demos
with complete handouts on all areas covered.

Class Description:
Understanding what special techniques make a
doll exceptional is the focus of this class.
Join Leslie in learning from start to finish,
with detailed instructions, how to create a beautiful
and durable doll. Our focus will be on needle
sculpting a head, inserting glass eyes with an
overlay and making armatures in the body for
a free-standing doll. Sewing, stuffing and color
composition with fabrics will also be explored.
As a bonus, Leslie will discuss the Chinese New
Year traditions for which this doll was designed.

Ball Jointed Humpty
Class Description:
What Happened
to Humpty after the fall??
He
came back to life as a ball jointed
doll!
Learn basic
ball jointing techniques by sculpting a
OOAK Humpty Dumpty with ball jointed legs. We will be sculpting over a Styrofoam base using
"La Doll", the air-dry stone
clay used by most Asian BJD (ball jointed
doll) artists in creating their OOAK
jointed dolls. By learning the basic jointing process, this class will
give you enough information to be able
to create your own BJD figures. (Student
should have a basic knowledge of sculpting)

Description:
Imagine the possibilities
you’ll discover when you create sumptuous,
lightweight felt for use in your doll costumes
and accessories. Forget what you think about
bulky felt. This is handmade fabric for couture
costuming: drapable, sensuous and unique. We
will explore a spectrum of feltmaking techniques
using a base of fine silk, cotton, and merino
wool. You will learn the art of creating traditional,
nuno and cobweb felt that adds a new and distinctive
dimension to your work. Expect to make a finished
piece of fine felt fabric approximately 22” x
22” resulting in a sampler of techniques.
Time: 1 day (Wednesday)

Students should bring a head they have sculpted at home from their choice of
clay type. If using air drying clay or ceramic clay, the head should be kept
moist in a plastic bag. Sylvia will critique and help students to refine their
heads, if necessary, and you will learn how to sculpt nice ears and set them
at the right place on your improved head.

Drafting a Cloth Body for your Sculpted Head,
Hands & Feet
Class
Description: This
will be a class where students will bring
their own head and hands, perhaps feet also,
and learn how to draft a cloth body appropriate
for the doll parts. Proportions for different
ages, realistic as well as exaggerated/distorted
figures will be covered. Students will learn
formulas for drafting a body that can be used
for future sculptures. Pattern variations necessary
for flange necks and shoulder plates, armatures,
and special poses will be included. How to
draft basic feet, how to draft feet to fit
into specific shoes, and how to draft shoes
for over the cloth feet included as well.

Class Description: You
will learn a method of sculpting that will

and a movable head.

Class Description: Beginning
with cat and rabbit heads, Akira will teach
how to create your own pattern for an animal
head; needle sculpting techniques; add

The machine sewing part of the class is minimal.
It is just to sew up the pattern pieces before stuffing.

Hand-Felted Character Head
Class
Description: In
this class, Deborah teaches her fascinating technique
for transforming fluffy merino wool into a lifelike
character head. The artist will guide you through
her step-by-step process to create your own unique
character. The class will explore tips and techniques
for sculptural feltmaking that combines traditional
wet felting with contemporary needle sculpting. Students
will have the option to choose either felt or glass-like
eyes. Expect to finish a character head that you
can attach to one of your own doll bodies or use
for future reference. You will gain enough knowledge
to continue to investigate the endless possibilities
of sculptural feltmaking.

Class Description:
Students will learn how to sculpt a doll
directly into porcelain with a hollow head
and also learn how to sculpt hands and feet. This
class is a unique chance to work in a new
medium. Most of the sculpting techniques
could be used in other sculpting media as
well. Students will take home the unfired
pieces.
