Mold Making Demystified

Description: This class offers an overview of the moldmaking process. We will explore a variety of materials and techniques. You will learn the limitations as well as the possibilities mold making has to offer. You will make a one piece silicone mold and a two piece plaster mold.

Materials: $20.00 kit fee (paid directly to the teacher) includes silicone, plaster, measuring cup, sculpting tools and clay.

Please bring: An assortment of objects no larger than will fit in a 3" cube.

Colorful Creatures in Clay and Knitted Wire

Description: Starting from a simple ceramic standing figure (provided), students will learn how to exaggerate proportions and build their own animal-like creature. Using Apoxie Sculpt, we will will explore facial expressions, animal components, and fancy sculpted clothing. Students will then enliven their figures through paint and dress them in colorful wire outfits.

Materials: $35.00 kit fee (paid directly to the teacher) includes ceramic figure base, apoxie sculpt, knitted wire sheets, 1 pair nitrile (non-latex) gloves, use of paint, sculpting tools, and brushes.

Please bring: (5) sheets of wax paper • (5) paper towel sheets (not a whole roll) • (1) water container
• A couple of small paint brushes • Scissors • Masking tape • A sewing needle

Optional: any small sculpting tools you own and love (5) favorite colored pencils.

Sculpt a "Jack" or "Jackie-in-the-Box"

Description: Ankie will teach you how to sculpt a dollface and hands from Japanese airdrying clay. You can make a "Jack-in-the-Box", or students can make a "Jackie-in-the-Box", it's your choice between a boy or a girl, sculpting procedures are the same, only the hair will reflect a Boy look or Girl look.

All will be painted with watercolor and varnished. We will put the doll together and you go home with a complete finished project.

Materials: $50.00 kit fee (paid directly to the teacher) includes: all materials to build the 'box' on wheels; finished body and arms; fabric to cover the body and arms; materials to embellish the body; hat and hair; baseform for head and hands; clay, paint and varnish.

Please bring: Needles • Threads • Pins • A pair of scissors.

Santos Maria Caged Skirt Doll

Description: Join Leslie in making your own doll with wooden cage skirt, cloth upper body, and armatured and jointed arms. You will learn to create a beautiful doll with a covered face form, a unique bodice, sleeves, and headdress, and incorporate a theme into the skirt with paint and fabric. We will spend time together discussing color and textures.

Materials: $55.00 kit fee (paid directly to the teacher before class) includes: Head and Body Fabric, Face Form, Class Booklet with Pattern, & Hand-made Cage Skirt to assemble.

Pre-work before class: Part 1 of Pattern, Kit, and 'things to do list' before class information will be sent out 4-6 weeks before class. There will be sewing pre-work of body and costuming.

Please bring: Supplies listed below

  • Small bag of stuffing
  • Assorted needles and crème thread
  • Decorator Chalks (or use mine) Black or dark grey, brown and metallic blue
  • Pencil and eraser- a fabric eraser works great
  • Cotton batting
  • Prisma Pencils: Dark brown and medium brown
  • Paint for Cage skirt & Crown - metallic works nicely (two colors of gold shown)
  • Various paint brushes- very small fine for painting eyes and large for painting cage and ½" stiff brush for glue
  • Small Hammer
  • Tacky Glue
  • Double check pattern
  • Water & small containers to rinse brushes
  • Paper towels
  • Optional: Stamps and ink- spray fixative for lettering on cage base

Prerequisite skills: Ease of using a sewing machine and hand-sewing

Hand-Felted Animal Head

Description: This is your opportunity to learn Deborah's unique approach and explore tips and techniques for sculptural feltmaking that combines traditional wet felting with contemporary needle sculpting. The artist will guide you through her
step-by-step process to create your own captivating animal head.

This is a two day class to ensure individual attention. The first day will be devoted to establishing the basic form of the animal head and felting. The second day will concentrate on sculpting and refining the features. In addition to sculptural feltmaking, Deborah will also demonstrate how she makes life-like animal eyes.

Materials: $25.00 kit fee (paid directly to the teacher) includes: Polyfil® batting, stuffing wool, merino wool, felting needles, instruction booklet and paper clay
eye forms.

Please bring: Reference photos of the animal head you wish to create • Two (2) old bath-size towels
• Sharp scissors (small or medium) • Decorator chalks or pastels for facial coloring • One (1) synthetic #4 flat artist's brush • Sakura® Pigma micron .05 pens for details (1 brown and 1 black).

Sculpting & Painting a Paperclay Head

Description: Paperclay is without doubt a magical medium for artist and has been the medium of choice for me over the past 15 years. It is a perfect sculpting material in every way. In this 3 day workshop, students will sculpt, paint and wig, step by step, a
2 1/2 inch paperclay doll head, focusing on a variety of techniques which will demonstrate the versitility of this amazing air drying clay.

Materials: Paint for faces & hair for wigs will be supplied by the instructor.

Stuffed Cloth Hands, Boots, and Bows

Description: Shelley will demonstrate her techniques for making beautiful cloth hands, stuffed fabric boots with fabric-covered soles, and stuffed cloth bows. Bring along your own materials and practice the techniques in class as time allows, or, if you prefer, treat it as a day of in-depth demos with handouts and patterns, and use what you learn on projects at home. Bows made in class can be turned into stuffed necklaces or brooches.

Please bring: If you are local or driving, please let me know if you can bring a sewing machine to share.

    Fabrics:
  • hands: 1/8 yard cotton knit skin fabric (you can use old t-shirts for practice, or buy Waldorf-style doll skin fabric).

  • boots: 1/8 yard boot fabric (any type of woven fabric that doesn't fray too horribly will do), plus 1/8 sole fabric (calico weight)
  • bows: ¼ yard bow fabric (any type of woven fabric that doesn't fray too
    horribly will do)

  • Scissors (for cloth and paper/cardboard)
  • Needles: regular sewing type and curved quilting needle

  • Thread: regular sewing type to match your fabrics, plus thicker buttonhole or craft thread to match your bow fabric
  • [5] pipe cleaners for
