Fred Thompson, California USA, 1970

Fred and his brother started making toys and carving soap and wood at an early age. Fred went on to do carving on antique furniture and in-the-round carvings. The loss of two fingers in a mining accident and the discovery that he had muscular dystrophy just made him more determined to succeed in his art. Meeting Lewis Sorenson in 1969 introduced him to the world of dolls, and encouraged him to carve figures. He spent many years carving large groups of religious figures: the Last Supper, the Crucifixion, Gethsemane and Moses and the Ten Commandments. The sensitive interpretations of emotions in his figures elicit profound responses to his work.

Fred made dolls for 43 years. He said "I hope they find me when my time has come, working in my little shop with a doll to be in my hand !!"

His work remains on display at:
