Fred
and his brother started making toys and carving soap
and wood at an early age. Fred went on to do carving
on antique furniture and in-the-round carvings. The loss
of two fingers in a mining accident and the discovery
that he had muscular dystrophy just made him more determined
to succeed in his art. Meeting Lewis Sorenson in 1969
introduced him to the world of dolls, and encouraged
him to carve figures. He spent many years carving large
groups of religious figures: the Last Supper, the Crucifixion,
Gethsemane and Moses and the Ten Commandments. The sensitive
interpretations of emotions in his figures elicit profound
responses to his work.
Fred
made dolls for 43 years. He said "I hope they
find me when my time has come, working in my little shop
with a doll to be in my hand !!" |
