Lord Poole
by Susanna Oroyan

Donated by Kathie Van Winkle, NIADA patron

Edition number: If we go back to the doll definitions (written by NIADA, ODACA, and British Council of Doll Artists about 20 yrs. ago), I believe they'd be called a limited series. They're technically OAK since each face is tweaked, making them related instead of identical.

"Artist's Original Limited Series -Individual one-of-a-kind dolls handmade by the creating artist which form a "family" or related group because of shared similarity of character, theme, or costume. Dolls in this type of a series may appear to be very similar; however, as each one is individually sculpted and constructed without a mold by the artist, they are essentially one-of-a-kind originals."

Since these dolls started from a press mold, they're don't strictly meet the above criterion of "without a mold". But they are certainly not a limited edition since they are all different, some "tweaked" quite substantially, and they're not One-of-a-Kind Costume because there are more differences than just costume. So there really isn't a definition for them. Think Limited Series is the closest if you need a definition. Otherwise, you'll just have to go with a brief explanation. (Only faces were from a press mold; all other parts were individually sculpted.)

Description:
Here's a general description of what we know about the two dolls. We believe they came from the Maude Alice mold that she (Susie Oroyan) described as "an angular face and a very long nose". (Assuming here that she ultimately made other faces, but I don't think she did. I believe all came from the Maude Alice face or the "round face, with chins, and a rather small nose." I believe all of these dolls were sculpted in polymer clay - don't think she was able to get paperclays out of the molds.)

Medium: Medium: Paperclay and cloth
