Description

The idea of “Years” was to show all of stages of life is beautiful. No one can avoid the elapse of the life, but the beauty will be retained when the life is dying. Time flies like an arrow, and years rush like a train, from the puerile childhood to innocent teenager; from confident youth to mature middle-age; from our autumn years to profound old age. This recalls the past which was fluctuating and ephemeral. With age, it is realised that beauty has been sublimated as a lifestyle. Regardless of the philosophy of life or death, there is nothing when you come to this world, as there is nothing when you pass away. The whole life is just a memory whether it is either happy or sad. Therefore, we had an idea of showing a female’s whole life — Years.  Youth is one piece of Years. Maybe youth is like an incredible beauty that is, confident, graceful and gentle, which people are unable to resist. Youth is like a landscape which never appears dull. I designed a scene that she might be going to attend an important event and she is dressing up.

The Story of the Stone (12 pieces) – Xue Baochai
Materials Used: Cloth, thread, cotton, paper, yarn, wire, beads
Size: 18” x 13” x 9.8”
Year Created: 2011

Description

Xue Baochai is another heroine of The Story of the Stone. But her personality was just opposite of Lin Daiyu. She was also an intelligent and talented lady, but she was unlike Lin Daiyu who was just to be herself and dare pursue love and freedom. She actually was a model of young girls in feudal age and a faithful servant of feudal ethics and morals, but she still had a sad life in the end. She should have been an innocent and genuine girl instead of being sophisticated and slick, but the society taught her a philosophy that was different from Lin Daiyu that the safety of herself and her family was always to be got priorities. But there still had few scenes showing her true nature. One of the classical scenarios was that she was chasing a butterfly when she was alone in the garden rather than being always serious and dignified that is beyond a young girl.

Description

Lin Daiyu is one of a set of works that is called The Story of the Stone. Actually, it is a great masterpiece of literature by Chinese writer, Cao Xueqin, who was one of the most famous novelists and poets in the history of Chinese literature. This novel mainly describes a group of honourable women who were wise, intelligent, independent and self-respected. Cao Xueqin, through these women’s eyes, criticised the society that was controlled by males for two thousand years depicting it as hypocritical, conspiratorial and cruel. He was the first man in Chinese history, who, affirmed a philosophy of death, instead of a philosophy of life. He produced an ending of death for extolling the free spirit of these women which is eternal and satirised those who were like the walking dead, even though they were physically alive. There are many experts who exclusively research the aesthetics of The Story of the Stone in China. At the same time, many artists also hope to express these women’s figures by visual representation. However, different artists have different understandings about “The Story of the Stone”. As for our version, we hoped to convey a spirit that is free and eternal. The set of works contains 12 pieces, and Lin Daiyu is heroine of the novel. She was a noble lady who was very smart, genuine, sensitive and kindhearted. Most importantly, she never gave up to pursue love and freedom, but she had the worst fate in that dark time. One of the most classical scenarios about Lin Daiyu is “Daiyu buries fallen flowers”. It’s because she loved and cherished flowers, in her opinion, all of flowers were life forms and she thought it’s the cleanest way to burry them when they are falling (dying). It proved that she had a unique view to the beauty. This scene shows that she is putting the falling flowers into a bag and then to burry them.
